Job Summary

• The Medical-Surgical (Med/Surg) RN is responsible for providing high-quality nursing care to adult patients with a variety of medical and surgical conditions
• This includes pre-operative, intra-operative (if required), and post-operative care, as well as general medical nursing.
• The nurse collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams (doctors, physiotherapists, other nurses) to plan and implement patient care, monitor progress, and educate patients and their families.
• The role demands strong clinical judgment, excellent communication, and the ability to adapt in a fast-paced, changing environment.

 
Key Responsibilities / Duties

• Here are the typical duties for a Med/Surg RN:
• Patient Assessment & Monitoring
• Perform comprehensive assessments on admission (head-to-toe, vitals, medical history) and re-assess regularly.
• Monitor vital signs, pain levels, fluid balance, and other clinical parameters; detect and report abnormalities.
• Interpret diagnostic test results (labs, imaging) and integrate findings into care plans.
• Care Planning & Implementation
• Develop, implement, and update individualized nursing care plans based on patient needs. Meadville Medical Center+1
• Administer medications (oral, intravenous), IV therapies, and other treatments per physician orders and hospital protocols.
• Provide wound care, dressings, catheter care, and other procedural nursing tasks.
• Support patient mobility, hygiene, nutrition, and other activities of daily living (ADLs).
• Pre- and Post-Operative Care
• Prepare patients for surgery (pre-op assessments, patient education, consent, pre-op checklists).
• Assist in intra-operative care if required (in some settings), or in transferring patients to/from OR.
• Provide post-operative care: monitor recovery, manage pain, assess wounds, prevent complications.
• Help in discharge planning: educate patient/family on post-surgical care, medicines, follow-up. M
• Teach patients and families about their condition, medications, self-care, and recovery process.
• Act as liaison between the patient, physician, and other healthcare staff to ensure continuity of care.
• Documentation & Reporting
• Maintain accurate, timely patient records (nursing notes, assessments, care plans). careers.aamcn.org
• Report changes in patient condition, complications, or any safety concerns to the relevant medical team.
• Participate in patient safety initiatives, quality improvement, and audit processes.
• Professional Development & Teamwork
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary team (physicians, physiotherapists, other nurses) for patient care.

 
Qualifications & Requirements

• Here are the typical qualifications and skills required for this role:
• Education: Registered Nurse (RN) license; a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is often preferred. V
• Basic Life Support (BLS).
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required/preferred.
• (Optional) Certification in Medical-Surgical Nursing (CMSRN) for experienced roles.
