Job Description:
- As a Registered Nurse in the Neurovascular ICU, you will provide specialised, high-acuity nursing care to patients experiencing neurovascular conditions (e.g., stroke, aneurysm, intracerebral haemorrhage, subarachnoid haemorrhage, vasospasm, cerebral infarct) and other complex neurological/neurosurgical issues.
- You will collaborate with the multidisciplinary team (neurosurgeons, neurologists, interventional radiologists, critical care physicians, therapists) to deliver evidence-based, patient-centred care, ensuring optimal outcomes, safety, and quality of life for patients and their families.
Key Responsibilities :
- Provide direct nursing care to neurovascular/neurosurgical ICU patients, including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care.
- Monitor and interpret neurological status (e.g., Glasgow Cma Scale, pupil response, motor strength, cranial nerve function), vital signs, intracranial pressure (ICP) if applicable, cerebral perfusion, haemodynamic parameters and other ICU-specific metrics.
- Administer medications (including thrombolytics, antihypertensives, antiplatelets, anticoagulants), intravenous infusions, blood products, and collaborate in titration to protocol.
- Provide or assist in specialised neurovascular interventions (pre- and post-interventional care for thrombectomy, coiling, clipping, angiography) and manage post-procedure monitoring.
- Collaborate with neuology/interventional teams in management of vasospasm (e.g., monitoring transcranial Doppler studies, administering nimodipine, hypertensive/hypervolemic therapy), and other prevention protocols.
- Manage ventilated patients, patients with advanced monitoring lines (arterial, central venus, intracranial, cerebral oximetry) and neuro-critical care modalities (e.g., therapeutic hypothermia, osmotherapy, hypertonic saline, barbiturate coma, neuromuscular blockade) and weaning.
- Perform frequent neurological/neurovascular assessments and promptly escalate concerns (changes in level of consciousness, new focal deficits, increased ICP signs, seizures) to the physicians.
- Provide seizure monitoring and care (initiation of EEG monitoring, anti-epileptic drugs, seizure precautions).
- Coordinate imaging (CT/MRI/angiography) and liaise with radiology/interventional teams.
- Assist with patient/family education regarding neurovascular disease, prevention of secondary injury, rehabilitation continuum.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols (stroke code activation, rapid transfer, neuro-vascular monitoring, falls prevention, aspiration precautions, intracranial pressure/ cerebral perfusion management).
- Document all nursing and patient care activities timely and accurately in the patient’s medical record.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, stroke registry data entry, outcome tracking, morbidity and mortality reviews.
- Maintain competency in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), neurological/neurosurgical nursing practices, and stay updated with latest guidelines (e.g., stroke care, neuro critical care).
- Provide mentorship, orientation and training to junior staff and participate in interdisciplinary rounds.
Qualifications :
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) licence in the jurisdiction.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred (or equivalent).
- Minimum (e.g., 2-3) years of ICU nursing experience; experience in neuro critical care or neurovascular/neurosurgical ICU strongly preferred.
- Current certification in ACLS; neuroscience/neuro-critical care certification (e.g., CCRN, SCRN) preferred.
