Job Description:

• Provide high-acuity nursing care in a progressive care (step-down) unit, managing patients who require more monitoring than a regular med/surg floor but are more stable than ICU.
• Serve as a bridge between ICU and general wards: closely monitor vital signs, deliver complex treatments, and detect early signs of deterioration.
• Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and other interdisciplinary teams to create, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.

 
Key Responsibilities :

• Patient Monitoring & Assessment
• Continuously assess physical, psychosocial, and functional status of patients.
• Monitor vital signs, telemetry (or other monitoring), lab values, and patient trends.
• Identify and report early signs of patient instability or deterioration.
• Medication Administration & Infusions
• Administer medications, including titratable drips (as per unit protocols).
• Perform assessments before and after drug administration.
• Handle intravenous therapy, starting IV lines, changing dressings, etc.
• Care Planning & Documentation
• Develop and individualize care plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
• Document assessments, interventions, and patient responses thoroughly in electronic health records.
• Incorporate discharge or transition planning into daily care.
• Patient / Family Education
• Educate patients and families about diagnoses, treatments, self-care, and discharge instructions.
• Use therapeutic communication to support patient and family understanding and involvement.
• Procedures & Emergency Response
• Prepare patients and equipment for bedside procedures (e.g., catheterisation, line insertion).
• Respond to emergencies (codes, rapid response) and initiate life-saving interventions (CPR, defibrillation) as needed.
• Troubleshoot medical equipment (monitors, pumps).
• Leadership & Supervision
• Delegate and supervise tasks for licensed and unlicensed staff (CNAs, LPNs) in the unit.
• Act as charge nurse or team leader when assigned.
• Participate in performance improvement, compliance checks, and quality audits.
• Professional Development
• Maintain competence by attending trainings, in-services, and continuing education.
• Precept new nurses or students (if part of role).
• Participate in performance improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice.

 
Qualifications :

• Registered Nurse (RN) license (state-specific or relevant licensing body).
• Education: BSc Nursing (BSN) preferred (many hospitals), but an Associate Degree (ADN) may also be accepted.
• Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) mandatory; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) often required
